Victoria Foundation Celebrates 100 Years of Community Building

2024 is a landmark year for Victoria Foundation as we commemorate our 100th anniversary. As one of the oldest foundations in New Jersey and a long-standing funding partner in Newark, this moment offers a unique opportunity for us to reflect on our impact, as well as build on our rich history. While we look back, we are also looking ahead to stepping into a new era of philanthropy with community that places the voices, priorities, and the well-being of residents, local organizations, and other stakeholders at the center of our work.

Victoria Foundation was founded by Hendon Chubb on December 27, 1924, with the aspiration to help improve the lives of those less fortunate than himself. Named after his mother, Victoria Eddis Chubb, the Foundation began its charitable work in 1925 with a $2,000 grant to assess housing conditions in Orange, New Jersey.

Over the last century, the Foundation has refined its focus and transitioned to supporting community-based organizations, civic leaders, and residents with more than $380 million invested in families and children to date, with most of that going to organizations in Newark. This values-based, place-based, relationship-driven approach will continue to be guiding principles for Victoria's future work.

To celebrate this exciting milestone and pivotal moment in our history, Victoria Foundation is launching an anniversary campaign that will include special events and initiatives throughout 2024 in our hometown of Newark, New Jersey. The campaign will feature Victoria Foundation co-sponsored community and educational events spotlighting local, state, and national leaders, and signature grants. The campaign will culminate with a celebration in December 2024.

In addition to celebrating 100 years of partnerships and community-building with grantees, residents and stakeholders, 2024 is a transitional point for us. After nearly three years of learning, self-reflection, and planning, Victoria will roll out its new approach to grantmaking based on our updated framework this spring.

Building on our legacy of impact, we are stepping into the next century, ready to leverage our voice, relationships, and resources to reimagine the Foundation's approach to addressing inequality in Newark.

We invite you to join us in celebrating this momentous occasion. For updates about Victoria Foundation's 100th anniversary campaign, visit our website.
