Reflecting on Selma, March 2026

Free-at-Last

In March, Victoria Foundation leaders visited Selma, Alabama as part of the annual Bloody Sunday pilgrimage made by many to remember and reflect together on the civil right leaders and efforts. People make the pilgrimage annually to walk across the iconic Edmund Pettus Bridge, where on March 7, 1965, state troopers attacked civil rights activists in an incident that became known as Bloody Sunday.

Reflection from Executive Officer Craig Drinkard:

"This trip to Selma, and Montgomery, serves as a sobering reminder of the deep and painful history of Black people, descendants of the enslaved people, the deep commitment to making this country a more "perfect union" for everyone, even for those who despise our existence.

We learned about the late and great John Lewis and know the story of his savage beating on Bloody Sunday. We honored those whose names were forgotten, but who risked everything – not just for themselves but for future generations. Their advancing the Voting Rights Act of 1965, and the subsequent laws such as the Immigration Reform Act 1965 and others, led to progress for many.

Their work in Selma, as in other parts of the South, were often led by "regular" folks. They did not seek limelight, just wanted to make things better. There were no swarms of people. It has never been a lot of people starting and leading this work.

We have to remember that here in Newark. We cannot wait for a crowd swell to lead this work. We need to move with who is ready in the moment. We can always start where we are.

We are seeing efforts in Newark, large and small, emerging and longstanding, to grow the voice and power of residents. Victoria Foundation is working with partners to learn about and support these efforts.

I have a deep appreciation for our grantee partner New Jersey Institute for Social Justice and the others that prepare a weekend filled with deep and powerful reflection, and spirit-lifting time together. I have come back more hopeful each time. I appreciate having staff ready to think more deeply about how Victoria should move with this work."
